A mantel clock in an architectural wooden case with inlaid shell pattern at the base. Made by Gent, this is a subsidiary, or impulse dial, receiving the time from a controlling clock elsewhere in the installation. This example has a ‘silent’ bellows movement, which may have been intended for a bedroom: as well as advertising domestic installations, Gent also installed clocks in hospitals and boarding schools, where noise was always a particular concern.
